How to Validate a Name Before You Buy the Domain

Buying the wrong domain is an expensive mistake. Not because of the purchase price — but because of the time and money you will spend building a brand around a name that does not work. Here is the four-step validation process we recommend before committing to any name.

🗣️

Step 1

Say it out loud

This sounds obvious, but most people skip it. Say the name out loud five times. Then ask someone else to say it. Does it sound the way you intended? Is it easy to pronounce? Does it have any unintended sounds or associations? The radio test: imagine someone saying your domain on a radio advert. Could a listener spell it correctly without seeing it written down? If not, you have a problem.

Questions to ask

  • Is it easy to pronounce for your target audience?
  • Does it sound different from how it looks?
  • Are there any unintended words hidden in the name?
✏️

Step 2

Spell it

Say the name to five different people and ask them to write it down. If you get five different spellings, the name is too ambiguous. Spelling ambiguity is a silent brand killer — it means your audience cannot find you when they search for you. This is why misspellings as a naming strategy (Tumblr, Fiverr) only work when the brand is already famous enough to correct people's expectations.

Questions to ask

  • Can people spell it correctly after hearing it once?
  • Is there only one obvious way to spell it?
  • Does it contain any unusual letter combinations?
🔍

Step 3

Search it

Search the name on Google, X, and any relevant platforms. What comes up? Are there existing brands, products, or people using the name? Are there any negative associations? Also search for trademarks in your category. A name that is already trademarked in your industry is a legal risk, even if the domain is available. The domain being available does not mean the name is legally clear.

Questions to ask

  • Are there existing brands using this name?
  • Does it appear in any negative news or contexts?
  • Is it trademarked in your category?
📈

Step 4

Scale it

Imagine the name at 10x your current size. Does it still work? A name that is perfect for a solo creator might feel limiting when you have a team of 50. A name that is hyper-specific to one product might not work when you expand your range. Also consider: does the name work globally? If you plan to expand internationally, check that the name does not have negative connotations in other languages or cultures.

Questions to ask

  • Does the name still work if you expand your product range?
  • Does it work in other languages or cultures?
  • Is it flexible enough to grow with the brand?

The shortcut

If you are buying a Web3 domain from a curated marketplace like NomadNames.io, much of this work is already done. The domains in our vault have been selected because they are short, clean, memorable, and free of obvious issues. They pass the basic phonetic and structural tests.

You still need to do the trademark check and the scale test — those are specific to your business. But the naming fundamentals are already there.
